Cardiac Output Monitoring

What is Cardiac Output (CO)?

Cardiac output is the amount of blood the heart pumps in one minute. It’s important for assessing heart function and ensuring that organs receive enough blood.

When It is Used?

CRRT is typically used for patients who:

  1. Are hemodynamically unstable (e.g., low blood pressure).
  2. Have fluid overload that needs careful management.
  3. Need to control electrolyte levels (like high potassium).
  4. Have conditions requiring slow and steady removal of waste products.

    Invasive Methods

Pulmonary Artery Catheter (PAC):This method involves placing a catheter in the pulmonary artery to measure pressures and flow. It provides accurate CO readings but carries risks like infection.

    Minimally Invasive Methods

    Pulse Contour Analysis:

    1. FloTrac/Vigileo: Uses an arterial line to analyze pressure waveforms for continuous CO measurement.
    2. PiCCO: Combines pulse contour analysis with a technique called transpulmonary thermodilution for calibration.

    Pulse Power Analysis:

LiDCO Monitor: Estimates CO from arterial pressure waveforms using a standard arterial line.

    Non-Invasive Methods

    1. Nexfin Monitor: Uses a cuff on the finger to measure blood pressure waveforms and estimate CO.
    2. esCCO Monitor: Estimates CO based on pulse wave transit time, providing a non-invasive option.
