Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT)

What is CRRT?

CRRT is a type of dialysis used in Intensive Care Units (ICUs) for patients with acute kidney injury (AKI) or fluid overload. Unlike traditional dialysis, which is done intermittently, CRRT runs continuously over 24 hours, making it gentler on patients who are unstable.

When It is Used?

CRRT is typically used for patients who:

  1. Are hemodynamically unstable (e.g., low blood pressure).
  2. Have fluid overload that needs careful management.
  3. Need to control electrolyte levels (like high potassium).
  4. Have conditions requiring slow and steady removal of waste products.

    Benefits of CRRT

    1. Gentle on the body: Removes fluids and toxins slowly to reduce stress on the heart.
    2. Better fluid management: Allows for precise control over fluid balance.
    3. Flexible treatment: Can be adjusted based on the patient’s needs.

      Nursing Responsibilities

      1. Nurses are crucial in managing CRRT by:
      2. Monitoring vital signs and lab results: Checking for any changes or complications.
      3. Ensuring proper catheter function: Keeping the access point clear for blood flow.
      4. Working with the healthcare team: Collaborating with doctors to adjust treatment as needed.
